Morpeth School is a busy secondary school in Bethnal Green, East London, and like most inner-city schools it was short on room. Rather than tie up the playground with a long build, the school asked Container City™, the London team behind the stacked container buildings at Trinity Buoy Wharf, to add a new block of classrooms within the existing school grounds.

The result is around 240 square metres of extra teaching space, with the classrooms linked by a decked walkway. The building is painted a vibrant red to reflect the creative work that goes on inside, so it reads as a bold new addition rather than a temporary portable.

Build Method

As with other Container City™ projects, the modules were built and fitted out off site, then trucked in and lifted into place by crane. The whole installation took two days over the half-term break, so pupils' lessons weren't disrupted.

Structural engineering was by Furness Partnership. With the heavy lifting done in the factory, the work on site came down to foundations, service connections and the decked walkway that ties the classrooms together.

Interbode Thoughts

We love how quickly this one went from idea to working classrooms. Two days of craning over half term is about as painless as a school build can get, and the bright red shows a container building can have real personality. It's the same modular thinking behind our own designs: build it well off site, then drop it in with minimal fuss. If you need a smaller version for a studio or home office, our POD1 is a great starting point. Great job Container City™ and Morpeth School!
