Cuffley School needed more room for teaching and music, so rather than live with a drawn-out build on a busy school site, they turned to Container City™, the London team behind the well-known container buildings at Trinity Buoy Wharf. The result is a bright classroom and music studio block in the village of Cuffley, Hertfordshire, just north of London.

Three container units give the school around 75 square metres (over 800 sq ft) of extra space. The new block sits beside the main school building and is joined to it by a covered walkway, so students can move between classes without getting wet. The boxes are painted a bold green with orange framing, a cheerful nod to the creative work that goes on inside.

Build Method

Like other Container City™ projects, the modules were fitted out off site, then trucked in and craned into position. The whole building went in over a single day during the half-term break, so lessons weren't disrupted at all.

Structural engineering was by Furness Engineering. With most of the work done in the factory, only the groundwork, service connections and the covered link to the existing building were left to sort out on site.

Interbode Thoughts

We love this one because it shows how well containers suit schools. Space is always tight, budgets are tighter, and nobody wants a building site in the playground for months. Craning a finished classroom in over half term is about as low-fuss as it gets, and the green and orange proves a container building doesn't have to look industrial. If you're after a smaller version at home, a single 20ft studio like our BBQ module would make a great music room.

Great job Container City™ and Cuffley School!
