Refugio is a little beach hideaway on the wild coast of Chile's Coquimbo Region, near Huentelauquén and about 260km north of Santiago. Chilean architect Pablo Errázuriz was asked to create a place for short holidays on a very tight budget, somewhere safe, tough and easy to look after in a spot with strong winds, harsh weather and no mains power or water.

His answer is a small compound rather than a single house. A single 20ft container, clad in rusty Corten steel plates, holds the kitchen and bathroom. Beside it, a timber deck under a steel-framed awning becomes the living room, opening straight onto the views of the Pacific. Stone-walled courtyards filled with river sand give sheltered spots to pitch tents for extra guests, and a timber-clad water tower stands over the site, holding storage, the plant room, the water tank and a bedroom up top.

Build Method

Because the site is so remote, the container was fully prefabricated and fitted out in a workshop in Santiago, then trucked up the coast and dropped into place. Doing the hard work off-site kept costs down and meant the module arrived ready to use, secure and low maintenance from day one.

Only the civil works were done on site: the dry stone walls, the courtyards, the tower and the services. The palette is simple and honest, with weathering steel, timber decking and cladding, tubular steel framing and stone gathered from the area, so everything is left to age naturally in the salty air.

Interbode Thoughts

We love how much this one does with so little. One 20ft box handles the wet areas and the rest of the living happens outdoors, on the deck, in the courtyards and up in the tower, which is exactly how a beach shack should work. It's a great example of keeping the container small and smart and letting the site do the heavy lifting, much like our POD1 and POD2 designs, which pack a full 20ft module ready to drop onto a remote block. Great job Pablo!
