The Electric Hotel was a four-storey building made from recycled shipping containers, built as a travelling theatre set for a dance and sound show of the same name. Produced by Fuel and co-commissioned by Sadler's Wells and Without Walls, it premiered at the Norwich Festival in May 2010 before a run on a development site beside the old Victorian gas holders at King's Cross in London, finishing on 19 June.

The show was conceived and directed by David Rosenberg, co-founder of Shunt, with choreography by Frauke Requardt and design by Börkur Jónsson. The audience stood outside wearing headphones and watched the guests and staff through floor-to-ceiling windows, like voyeurs peering into a hotel at night. Inside were hotel rooms, corridors, stairs and a nightclub, with a bar on the ground floor for the audience.

Build Method

The hotel was put together by Container City, the London team behind the stacked container buildings at Trinity Buoy Wharf. Recycled shipping containers were stood on end and stacked into a four-storey frame of around 2,200 square feet, then clad to look like an ageing 1920s Bauhaus-style concrete building, complete with asymmetric lines and exterior handrails.

The whole front was glazed so the audience could see into every room. Because it was built from containers, the building could be taken apart, trucked to the next city and stood back up again, which is exactly what a touring show needs.

Interbode Thoughts

We love this one because it shows containers don't have to look like containers. With some clever cladding and a lot of glass, a stack of steel boxes became a moody old hotel that toured the country and then packed away again. The same stack-and-glaze thinking is behind our STACK2, which combines 2 x 40ft and 2 x 20ft containers over two levels with big glazed fronts. Great job Container City, Fuel and the whole Electric Hotel team!
