ContainerLove is a single-storey home near Kall in the Eifel region of western Germany, designed by Cologne studio LHVH Architekten and finished in 2006. It sits on a gently south-facing rural block surrounded by cow paddocks, woods and traditional saddle-roofed houses, so the dark, crisp boxes make quite a statement in the neighbourhood.
The house is made from three container-style modules, each 3 metres wide and 7, 9 and 14 metres long, arranged in an L around a sheltered timber deck. That gives about 90 square metres inside. The master bedroom and bathroom sit at one end, the second bedroom and an open office (easily a third bedroom) at the other, with a bright open living, kitchen and dining space in the middle opening onto the terrace through big glazed doors.
Build Method
LHVH took over the project from an earlier practice after planning approval, then reworked the floor plan and the arrangement of the modules and changed the facades and finishes. The modules are custom, wider than a standard 8ft shipping container, which leaves room for proper insulation and a bedroom that fits a double bed with space to walk around it.
Nearly all of the work was done off site. The modules were built in the factory over about four weeks, then trucked in, craned into place and connected in a single day. Only the joints, pipes and services were finished on site, and the residents moved in the same day the modules arrived.
Interbode Thoughts
We love this one because it shows how good modular can look when the planning is done properly. The L-shape wraps a private deck, the extra-wide modules fix the classic container problem of tight bedrooms, and a one-day install is exactly why we build this way.
