Hall & Woodhouse Portishead is a two-storey pub and restaurant on the quayside at Portishead Marina, just outside Bristol in Somerset. Family brewer Hall & Woodhouse opened it in November 2012, and the whole building is made from 28 recycled shipping containers, a nod to the area's working docks.

London architects Mackenzie Wheeler designed it with big glazed bar and dining spaces facing the water, backed by solid, enclosed back-of-house areas. Three of the containers are fitted out as private dining rooms, so you can book a table for your mates inside your very own shipping container. Tensile canopies run across the front, and cargo-style signage ties the whole thing together.

Build Method

The containers were modified off site and arrived fully insulated, decorated and fitted out, ready to be stacked. Once stacked, the boxes form a self-supporting structure, so no separate frame was needed, and the services were pre-installed so they could simply be plugged in on site.

The build took about ten months and cost around £2.4 million, for roughly 2,400 square metres of gross floor area. CAMRA's Pub Design Awards judges liked the result enough to give it the Newbuild Award in 2013, the first one handed out since 2006.

Interbode Thoughts

We love seeing containers used at this scale for something everyone can enjoy. It shows how far the modular approach can go: do the hard work in the factory, stack it on site, and you end up with a striking building that really suits its waterfront home. The private dining containers are a great touch too, and not far off what a single 20ft BBQ module from our range can do in a backyard.

Great job Hall & Woodhouse and Mackenzie Wheeler!
