This family home sits in the hills of Santa Rosalía, off the Carretera a El Salvador just outside Guatemala City. It was designed by Olivero Bland Studio around a simple idea: give shipping containers that have already travelled the world a second life as a home for a young family.

At over 300 square metres it's a big house, but the layout is easy to read. The ground floor is an open plan living, dining and kitchen space that flows out to the lawn, and the containers sit on top as the upper level holding the bedrooms. The boxes are fanned out on the site to catch the morning and evening sun, which helps keep the inside at a comfortable temperature year round.

"adapt itself to the necessities of a young family" - Olivero Bland Studio

Build Method

The home uses four high cube shipping containers, two 40ft and two 45ft, stacked on a concrete and steel base. The corrugated container walls have been left exposed inside the bedrooms, so you always know what the house is made of.

The rest of the palette is steel, concrete, timber, glass and pebble stone, with most of the materials recycled. It's a low tech approach that relies on good orientation and cross ventilation rather than lots of mechanical systems, and the studio designed it so the spaces can change as the family's needs change over time.

Interbode Thoughts

We love how warm this one feels. The big timber ceilings, glass walls and exposed container steel work really well together, and the fan shaped layout is a clever way to get the most out of the sun without adding cost. If you like the idea of containers stacked over an open living level, have a look at our STACK2, which uses two 40ft and two 20ft containers for a similar two storey family home. Great job Olivero Bland Studio!
