This family home in Oxley, in Brisbane's south-west, is built from four 40ft high cube shipping containers, cross-stacked so the top pair sits at right angles over the bottom pair and cantilevers out past it. Designed by architect Dan Burnett and built for the Archer family, it packs in three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a study.
A covered walkway leads to the front door. Downstairs, the two ground-floor containers hold an open-plan lounge, dining area and a single-wall kitchen beside the stair, with floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto a big entertaining deck. That deck sits right under the cantilevered containers above, so it's sheltered from sun and rain and perfect for long dinners outside. Upstairs are the bedrooms, a balcony and a roof garden.
Build Method
The containers were cut, reinforced and fitted out off site, then craned into position, with the modules assembled on site in about a day. Cross-stacking is what makes it work: turning the upper containers 90 degrees creates the overhangs and the covered deck without extra structure, and gives every level a different outlook.
Inside, the steel boxes disappear behind natural timber veneer walls and ceilings and solid bamboo floors, while outside some of the container corrugations are left exposed next to new cladding. Dan has said container homes can be one of the cheapest ways to build, and this project was a big part of showing Queensland families what that can look like.

Four containers, one clever twist, and you get a covered outdoor room that most standard houses would have to build separately.
